Team Leader (Internal Applications Only)

Job Introduction

*Please be aware we are only accepting internal applications at this time*

We are seeking a proactive, hands-on Team Leader to oversee and support the delivery of operational services across the training areas and firing ranges on the Defence Training Estate. In this role, you will lead a team of operatives who are responsible for keeping the estate safe, functional, and ready for military training.

Your team will carry out a range of critical tasks, from preparing and maintaining live firing ranges to ensuring training areas are patrolled, hazards are managed, and safety systems are fully operational. You’ll be at the heart of making sure the estate remains a safe and effective environment for training activities.

Shifts run between:  Monday - Friday

Hours of work: 37 per week

Contract: Permanent

Location: Willsworthy Ranges (EX20 3AL) and Merrivale Ranges (PL20 6SR)

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and line-manage Training Area Operatives, ensuring effective contract delivery.
  • Oversee the daily readiness and safety of firing ranges and training areas, acting as the main point of contact for tasking and operational decisions.
  • Work alongside your team on practical tasks—around 50% of your time will be hands-on.
  • Manage and operate range safety systems, including flags, lights, warning signals, and control offices.
  • Carry out preventative, planned, and reactive maintenance to keep ranges and training areas safe and fit for purpose.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, plant, and equipment in support of operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including H&S, range standing orders, and relevant legislation.
  • Keep accurate records and complete reports using both IT and paper-based systems.
  • Support training delivery through efficient resource allocation and operational readiness checks.
  • Undertake any other duties necessary to maintain the smooth running of the training estate.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Leadership experience in estate services, facilities management, or a similar operational environment.
  • Competent in grounds maintenance and plant machinery operation.
  • Sound understanding of Health & Safety, COSHH, manual handling, and risk assessments.
  • Strong communicator, able to engage confidently with colleagues and military personnel.
  • Proficient in basic IT, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Highly organised, adaptable, and proactive in problem-solving.
  • Committed to ongoing training and professional development.
  • Holds a full UK manual driving licence.

This role is ideal for someone with experience working on the Defence Training Estate or in a similar operational or rural environment, who thrives on leading from the front and being actively involved in day-to-day delivery.
